LARRY STAPLES

Larry served the Community by being a Verona Ruritan for 50 years!  During these years he also served on the Board of the Augusta County Fair and then got the Ruritans involved with the Fair by taking care of the gate  In his earlier years he was a Verona Volunteer Fireman.  Larry was always someone that liked to stay busy and help wherever he could.  He drove a Quick Livick bus taking the “Boy Scouts” and “Girl Scouts” to Washington, D.C.  He taught Sunday School and was a member of the Verona United Methodist Church.  Larry’s career involved being a  Senior Vice President for Planters Bank & Trust which is now Union  Bank & Trust for 38 years.  During his banking career he taught American Institute Banking classes at Blue Ridge Community College.  He was a graduate from Virginia Bankers Association School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin.

Larry always had time for family and friends.  He was a sports fan and enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and listening to all of the games.  He was invited and attended the Masters three times and was there the year Tiger Woods won his first Masters.  Larry also played golf in a tournament in Ohio with the Senior Pros.  He loved going to Nascar Races with his daughter Amy, and loved hunting with his son Jamie.

In 2013, a week before Christmas, he found out that he had cancer in his kidney.  Larry had many miracles during his battle with cancer and stayed positive.  He spoke at many churches and cancer support groups to keep people positive about their cancer.  He believed that God was there for you.  Larry was married to Mary Jane for 51 years.  They had 2 children, Jaime Staples and Amy Gerdemen.  They have 3 grandchildren, Sean, Megan, and Parker.  Larry always had a smile and loved all his family.  He lost his fight with cancer on March 9th, 2017.
