THE 2010 AUGUSTA COUNTY FAIR
IS DEDICATED TO:
.
The Fire and Rescue agencies
that serves the communities within
Augusta County
In 1923 the first organized fire department started operations and continues to serve the citizens of Augusta County. It didn't take long for other communities to follow suite. Today there are at least 20 fire departments that serve the citizens of Augusta County. In recent years, many of the fire departments have assumed the duties of emergency medical services. This program allows fire departments with personnel who are cross trained for EMS to provide life threatening emergency care to patients until the ambulance arrives. Many lives have been touched since this program was put into place.
Ambulance service was introduced to the area in 1938; initially the rescue squad's only responsibility was to rescue people involved in motor vehicle crashes. If citizens needed to go to the hospital for other reasons, they would have to take themselves or call for an ambulance like vehicle which was owned by the local funeral home. With time, this service, too, has grown in our communities.Currently there are a total of 13 rescue squads serving the county. The countless number of medically trained personnel have devoted hundreds of hours to prepare and be available to respond to your calls for help.
Augusta County is very fortunate to have these men and women, volunteer and career alike, who have dedicated their life to serve our communities providing fire and EMS services in our time of need.
